Is it safe to forward mass emails?

Forwarding mass emails (such as emailed chain letters or bizarre consumer warnings) seems harmless but may have negative repercussions.

Forwarding mass emails (otherwise know as SPAM)…

  • slows down provider networks, consuming bandwidth and disk space, and generally drives up costs for all of us.
  • forces others to waste time sifting through these messages and verifying the validity of the information.
  • can spread hype and/or unnecessary fear and paranoia.
  • can spread malicious code and viruses.

For security and efficiency, we at PSMail strongly recommend that you do not forward mass emails and SPAM. HoaxBusters and Snopes.com are great sites to help you determine the validity of a message that you suspect is SPAM. Always check these sites first before forwarding such messages to others.
